  • December 6, 2021

Karoline Rodrigues (1993) has joined the HOST research team of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) in December 2021 and will be working on the doctoral research “Labor, urban inequality and inclusion in the Brussels construction sector (1695-2025). Under the supervision of Wouter RyckboschHeidi Deneweth (history) and David Bassens (geography), she aims to gain insight into the long-term dynamics within the Brussels construction sector. This project analyses the role of the labor market in the promotion of social inclusion, which can lead to a decreased intra-urban inequality.

In September 2021, Karoline completed her Master in History at the VUB where she wrote her Master's thesis on Belgium's participation in the International Women’s Year of the United Nations in 1975. In this research she analyzed the initiatives taken by the Belgian government in both the national and international context and how the political, social and economic background of the 1970s impacted the development of an equal opportunities policy in Belgium. With this study, she was awarded with the Dr. Renée De Bock Doehaard Prize for the best Master's thesis with a historical approach of the academic year 2021.
