Since the coronavirus affects public meetings in Belgium and many more countries worldwide, PhD defences are to be held online, as was also the case with the defence of Kristof Loockx. Despite this inconvenience, the PhD student of both HOST (Vrije Universiteit Brussel) and the Centre for Urban History (University of Antwerp), superbly defended his dissertation on wednesday 27th May. In 'From Sail to Steam: Two Generation of Seafarers and the Maritime Labour Market in Antwerp, 1850-1900', he makes fresh, new insights in the labour market that accompanied the emergence of steamships, and revalues the attention towards the maritime workers who made part of that evolution.
The doctoral project was supervised by Hilde Greefs (Centre for Urban History, University of Antwerp) and Anne Winter (HOST, Vrije Universiteit Brussel).
